Ingredients
  

For the Onions
  • 6 large Vidalia onions
  • 6 tbsp unsalted butter softened
For Seasoning
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder optional

  • Fork
  • Measuring spoons
  • Knife

Method
 

  1. Peel outer skins from Vidalia onions. Pierce each top to bottom with fork tines 6-8 times using fork for steam vents.
  2. Fill large pot water halfway. Add 1 tsp salt from measuring spoon. Bring boil high heat. Drop onions in, boil uncovered 40-45 minutes till fork pierces center easy.
  3. Drain pot. Run cold water brief to handle. Slice each onion half top to bottom using knife, keep layers intact on plate.
  4. Pry layers slight with fork tines. Stuff 1 tbsp softened butter per half using measuring spoon. Sprinkle salt, pepper, garlic powder from measuring spoons.

Notes

  • Vidalias sweet key; yellow subs work but milder. Test one onion doneness first.
  • Grill halves butter-side down 2 minutes char optional.
  • Make ahead boil, fridge 2 days, reheat steam or microwave.
